Work in progress COMPLETED !
Model now available on the shop page : APOLLO 11 1/24th scale model – Chronic3D
APOLLO SPACECRAFT
CSM 107 COLUMBIA and LM 5 EAGLE
what about 1/24th scale model ?
It’s a big project that’s been on my mind for a long time.
Some project news about Command Module :
And Service Module :
The ascent stage of Lunar Module :
And finally, the descent stage :
With a lovely animation of leg deployment :
The CSM print test. Let me know in comments what you think about this :
The first print test of ascent stage :
The descent stage has several challenges to overcome. But i think you’ll love the result :
And the final print test result :
The descent stage required a lot of reworking/printing to make it as realistic as possible, and as easy to print and assemble as possible.
The result is as follows:
I still have to conform the parts, label them, make the assembly instructions and double-check everything. Will you be able to wait a little longer?
Love this!!! But I will print it at 1/20th to match the rest of my collection of your work. Started on the Saturn IB at this scale and it’s massive. I can only imagine what Saturn V and Starship will look like at 1/20th. Saturn V will top over 15 feet at that scale – but the kids getting my history of US manned space flight class will love it. BTW – the reason I selected 1/20th was because there was a commercial model of the F-1 engine made in that scale so everything matches. Thank you for your excellent work! (paypal inbound)
Would love to see a 1/24 scale model of the Lunar module! It has always been one of my favorite modeling subjects. I have built 1/72 and 1/48 versions and would love to see the detail your excellent designs skills would add.
BTW – would you consider doing the interior of the LEM to allow for a cutaway model ? It’s sometimes useful to be able show the kids what the inside looked like. It would be nice if that option was available on both spacecraft for educational purposes.
I have two printers running 24/7 on your models….
Hello Derek, of course i’m planning to do the interior. But that’ll be in a second phase. It’s a big project but the beginnings are promising. And my goal is to make everything as simple as possible, without painting, and 100% fdm.
Many Thanks! Surveyor Landing Motor just off the press and it looks great after sanding and painting. Work continues on Saturn IB – I’m going slow and doing it justice by proper filling and sanding before and after painting. I suspect it will be at least another month before the first stage is done. Capsule and escape tower printing so I will start on painting those in the interim. I have always wanted to a do a 1/6 LEM with astronauts on the surface. That would go nicely with the Surveyor! Even with two printers going I’m hard pressed to make parts fast enough…
Great looking Model, will definitely get this one. Will you be making a stand to display it horizontally?
Of course I do! Ideally I’d like a support that allows the whole thing to be rotated like on a barbecue. But I don’t see how. Otherwise, it’ll have to be horizontal, unless you have any other ideas?
Maybe this can give you some idea about a mount.
