ATLAS F SPIRIT OF OPLIN – NAVSTAR 1
The F system, presented here, the last Atlas model, consisted of a hardened silo facility where the missile was stored vertically, then lifted to the surface on a platform and launched. The NAVSTAR version and satellite are also available as product options. Get the STL files here to reproduce this model at 1/48 scale. The complete model on its launch structure is 750 mm high.
Price range: €5.00 through €12.00
Description
The Atlas missile system was developed over several years beginning in the late 1950s.
As an ICBM, it had three main iterations, the D, E and F models.
The F system, presented here, the last Atlas model, consisted of a hardened silo facility where the missile was stored vertically, then lifted to the surface on a platform and launched. It was the first in-ground vertical launch system and was the prototype for all systems in use today. There were 72 of these silos built between 1960 and 1962 and they remained operational until 1965 when they were decommissioned.
I would like to thank Scott VOSS and Bruce Townsley of the Atlas Missile Museum of Texas for providing all the plans that enabled the modeling of this launcher.
This Atlas F based at the silo was assigned to the 578th Strategic Missile Squadron based at Dyess Air Force Base. It was Atlas 64F, serial number 61-2550 “Spirit of Oplin”(numbered as 550 on the missile).

On February 22, 1978, this same launcher was finally used to place the OPS 5111 satellite, also known as NAVSTAR 1 or GPS 1, into orbit. This was the first demonstrator in a set of 24 satellites designed to test the very first GPS solution.
Download the STL files here to reproduce these models at 1/48 and 1/24 scale for the satellite.
